What Causes Permanent Makeup to Fade? Here Are 3 Common Reasons

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is…

“Why are my brows fading?”

Or…

“My lips don’t look as vibrant anymore. Is that normal?”

The answer is… yes!

Permanent makeup naturally softens over time, but how quickly it fades is different for everyone. Your skin type, lifestyle, skincare routine, sun exposure, and even your body’s natural healing process all play a role.

And before you panic… your brows didn’t pack their bags overnight. 😂 Fading happens gradually, but there are a few everyday habits that can speed things up more than you might realize.

Let’s talk about the three biggest culprits.

☀️ 1. Sun Exposure

Living in Southern California and avoiding the sun is about as realistic as telling your dog not to bark. 😂

Whether you’re heading to the beach, relaxing by the pool, gardening, hiking, or simply enjoying our beautiful weather, ultraviolet (UV) rays are one of the biggest reasons permanent makeup gradually fades over time.

The good news?

You don’t have to become a vampire. 🧛🏻♀️

Once your permanent makeup is fully healed, a few simple habits can help protect your investment:

• Apply SPF to the treated area.

• Wear a hat during long periods of sun exposure.

• Be mindful of excessive tanning on your face.

A little protection today can help your brows and lips stay looking beautiful longer.

🧴 2. Active Skincare Ingredients

  • I love good skincare just as much as the next person.

Retinol, Retin-A, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, and other exfoliating products can do amazing things for your skin.

    Unfortunately…

Your permanent makeup isn’t quite as excited about them. 😅

Many of these ingredients work by increasing skin cell turnover. While that’s wonderful for your complexion, regularly applying them directly over healed brows or lips may encourage your permanent makeup to soften more quickly.

That doesn’t mean you need to give up your favorite skincare products.

Just be mindful of where you’re applying them. Your skin and your permanent makeup can absolutely get along… they just appreciate a little personal space. 😉

✨ 3. Lasers, Chemical Peels & Advanced Skin Treatments

This one surprises a lot of people.

Procedures such as:

• Laser treatments

• Medium and deep chemical peels

• Aggressive resurfacing

• Certain medical-grade skin treatments

may affect cosmetic tattoo pigment, depending on the treatment and the area being treated.

Here’s one of the easiest ways to help protect your permanent makeup…

Always let your aesthetician, dermatologist, or laser technician know you have permanent makeup before beginning treatment.

They can’t protect something they don’t know exists.

That quick conversation could make all the difference.

Your future brows will thank you. 😉

Every Client Is Different

One of the things I love about permanent makeup is that no two clients are exactly alike.

Some people retain color for several years.

Others notice gradual softening sooner.

Neither is necessarily right or wrong.

Your skin type, lifestyle, medications, immune system, skincare routine, and daily habits all influence how your permanent makeup ages.

At Radiant Ink, my philosophy has always been to work with your skin, not against it. I prefer allowing your permanent makeup to naturally soften over time so that, when it’s ready, we can perform a beautiful color refresh while respecting the integrity of your skin instead of continually layering more and more pigment year after year.
