Aftercare

Aftercare is the most important part of your lip blush or lipstick-look permanent makeup healing process. Following these steps will ensure your lips heal beautifully, retain pigment, reduce scabbing, and fade less over time

Lip AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for choosing Radiant Ink to help create your perfect lips, this is a journey, and we are in this together.

  • Your aftercare is essential to your healing result and can make or break your design. If these rules are not followed with precision, there is a large possibility of infection, blurred design and/or heavily faded results. Please adhere to these rules strictly for the next 10 days.

  • You have invested a lot of hard-earned money into this treatment we strongly advise that you follow these recommendations.

  • Your “Healing Time” will vary from around 7 to 14 days. You will know when your lip is healed as it will be soft and smooth to touch and feel like normal skin with absolutely no flaking or dryness.

  • Until your lip reaches this “soft and smooth” stage – it has not healed, and you must continue to follow your aftercare instructions until then.

  • Not everyone will experience flaking during their healing time….so “how do you know your lips have healed?”

  • If you are 7 to 14 days into your healing phase, and there are no signs of any dryness or flaking at all then you are probably healed, and you can therefore stop following the aftercare steps.

After care steps

When you get home, you will want to wipe your tattoo every hour with a wet cotton round or wet wipes and pat the area dry to ensure no fluids sit and form scabs. Fluids will leak from the tattoo to form scabs and you DO NOT want these fluids to sit on your tattoo and form these scabs.

Moisturize with the provided ointment as needed just enough to hydrate your skin.

Do not use anything other than the aftercare provided for healing!

Moisture: Lips will tend to be very dry. Keep them moist

Some peeling may occur. DO NOT PEEL OFF! Do not wipe your lips with a napkin while eating, blot instead.

Drink through a straw. Depending on the type of procedure either lip blushing or lipstick look, Lips have a tendency to fade after the first procedure.

No smoking right after lip procedure.

  • Your lips may feel swollen and sore at this stage so treat with care. If you have swelling, an ice bag (Wrap an ice pack or a Ziplock of ice in a towel) could be applied for the first few hours, alternating ten minutes on, ten minutes off.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Day 1

Your lips will be swollen and may be uneven.

Due to the nature of the treatment, and alternating sides during our session, the lips will be at different stages when we finish. Don’t worry, this will subside quickly.

Please do not listen to feedback from your partners, friends or relatives at this time. They have not sat with you in the room and do not understand the process. The color will be dark/bright today, as we are looking directly into an open “wound” at the color inside. Your lips will be tender to the touch.

Day 2-3

On days 2 and 3 the color can look solid, bold and very dark. If you didn’t experience swelling on the 1st Day, you may wake up with some on the 2nd day. This is because our lymphatic system slows overnight and can cause “puffiness” in the mouth. This is all part of the healing process. Be patient your lips will start to slowly go down.

Day 4-7

We are now into the middle of the healing phase. During this time the design can feel tight and sometimes a light scab can start to form. You must not pick at the scab, continue to gently apply your cream to the area, without disturbing the flaking.

Sometimes, when the color is falling off, the lip underneath can appear very light in color – some clients can even think the color has disappeared. During this time the skin is repairing and the layers of skin healing over the lip underneath making it appear dull or even grey looking.

The color needs time to settle and you will find that the “richness” of the color will bloom back by the time we see you at your perfecting session.

Day 7-10

By this time most of the flaking (if any) will be finished. The lip should have lightened anywhere from 10-60% overall and the skin should feel soft and smooth. You may now feel your lip is too light and notice some gaps, this is normal. Each person is different, and each skin will retain pigment in different ways.

We can address all of this at the perfecting session and adjust, where required. If you are healed, you can now stop using your cream and you are able to wet the lip and start exercising again.

NOTE – When your lip is healed be careful not to cover them when applying your makeup. You will find that this considerably dulls the design and can make it look grey. To avoid this, apply your makeup as normal and then use a cotton tip, with a tiny blob of moisturizer, and wipe over each lip, to reveal the “richness” of the color.

Be careful to avoid getting any retinols, Vitamin A, exfoliants including AHA Acids (glycolic and Lactic), BHA Acids (Salicylic), peels, scrubs, and keep lightening products including pigments controllers, away from the lips at all times. This will extend the longevity of the color.

of 7 to 14 days

Remember

YOU WILL WAIT 6-8 WEEKS until we see you at your perfecting session, for good reason.

It takes this length of time for the skin to not only heal, but for the color to settle and reveal its true shade and final shape. At the perfecting session, we can address shape and color alterations to suit.

In my experience, by the time I see you next, your lip will have settled, and the color and shape will have softened.

Until then, do not worry and let the process take its journey, as they will change dramatically, over the coming few weeks.

If you have any issues that have not been addressed above, please contact me and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Lip Aftercare FAQ

  • How long does lip PMU take to heal?

Initial healing typically takes 7–14 days, during which peeling and color changes are normal. Full color settling can take 4–6 weeks, which is why touch-ups are scheduled later.

  • Why do my lips look so bright right after my appointment?

Fresh lip pigment always appears brighter and more intense immediately after treatment. This is temporary. As the lips heal, the color will soften and fade into a more natural tone.

  • Is peeling normal after lip blush or lipstick look?

Yes. Light to moderate peeling is a normal part of the healing process. Do not pick or peel the skin, as this can cause uneven color loss or scarring.

  • What should I avoid during lip PMU healing?

Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, smoking, kissing, swimming, saunas, excessive heat, and direct sun exposure during the initial healing period. These can irritate the lips and affect pigment retention.

  • Can I wear lipstick or lip gloss while healing?

No. Lipstick, gloss, or tinted balms should only be used after the lips are fully healed. Applying makeup too early can interfere with healing and cause uneven results.

  • What if I’m prone to cold sores?

If you have a history of cold sores, antiviral medication is strongly recommended before and after treatment. Lip PMU can trigger outbreaks in susceptible clients.

  • When should I schedule my touch-up appointment?

Touch-ups are typically scheduled 6–8 weeks after your initial session. This allows enough time for the lips to fully heal and the pigment to stabilize.

  • Will my lips fade over time?

Yes. Lip PMU is designed to fade gradually over time. Most clients enjoy results for 1–3 years, depending on lifestyle, sun exposure, and skincare habits.

  • What if my lips heal unevenly?

Minor unevenness is common after the first session and is usually corrected during your touch-up appointment. Healing varies from person to person.

  • When should I contact Radiant Ink during healing?

If you experience excessive swelling, signs of infection, or have concerns about your healing progress, contact us right away so we can guide you properly.
