Why You Shouldn't Get Permanent Makeup Right Before a Vacation, Event, or Trip

Brides, I’m talking to you.
And anyone planning a summer vacation, big event, wedding, cruise, beach trip, girls’ getaway, honeymoon, or family photos... this one is for you.
I’ve seen it too many times.
I get the call from someone who says, “I’m leaving for vacation in two weeks and I want to get my brows done before I go.” Or “I have a wedding/event coming up and I want my lips done so I don’t have to wear makeup.”
And while I totally understand the thought process, this is usually when I have to gently tell them...
You should probably wait.
Because one of the biggest misconceptions about Permanent Makeup is that you get it done and it instantly looks perfect, healed, and vacation-ready.
Unfortunately, that is not how it works.

Permanent Makeup Is Not the Same as Regular Makeup
A lot of people think Permanent Makeup is kind of like putting makeup on, just longer lasting.
But regular makeup sits on top of the skin. It is made with powders, waxes, creams, and pigments that wash off at the end of the day.
Permanent Makeup is different.
With brows, lips, scar camouflage, and even regular tattoos, pigment is placed into the skin, which means your body now has to heal.
And anytime the skin is healing, there are going to be temporary stages involved.
So no, it is not like putting on a pretty brow pencil, lip liner, or lipstick and walking out instantly “photo perfect” for the pool, beach, or honeymoon.
I wish it were that easy. 😅

What Happens During the Healing Process?
After your procedure, your brows or lips will go through a healing phase that can last about 7 to 10 days, sometimes longer depending on your skin, lifestyle, activity level, and how closely you follow aftercare.
During that time, you may go through phases like:
Dryness
Peeling
Flaking
Tenderness
A darker or bolder appearance at first
Uneven fading before everything settles

This is all a normal part of the process.
So if you were thinking you’d get your brows done and then head off to a tropical vacation two days later looking effortlessly perfect while lounging in the pool... that is probably not the best plan.
Unless your dream vacation involves avoiding the sun, skipping the pool, staying out of the ocean, saying no to hot tubs, and sitting indoors protecting your healing brows... then sure, go for it. 😂
But most people would rather actually enjoy their trip.
Why It Is Not Ideal Before a Vacation or Big Event
Here is the biggest issue: when you get Permanent Makeup right before a trip or important event, you may be healing during the exact time you want to be looking and feeling your best.
That means:
You may be in a peeling or flaking phase
You may not love how your brows or lips look in photos yet
You will need to avoid pool water, ocean water, lakes, and hot tubs
You should avoid saunas and excessive sweating
You will want to limit sun exposure
You may need to be extra careful with skincare and activities
In other words... all the fun vacation stuff becomes a problem.
And that kind of defeats the whole point.
If you’re going on vacation, you should be enjoying the beach, the sun, the pool, the dinners, the pictures, and all the fun, not stressing over aftercare, healing, or whether your brows are flaking in your bridesmaid photos.
Brides and Event Clients: Please Plan Ahead
If you are a bride, in a wedding party, heading on your honeymoon, or planning a big event, this is especially important.
I know Permanent Makeup sounds like the perfect idea before a wedding or big trip, and honestly, it is... if you plan it early enough.
That is the key.
You want enough time for your initial procedure, your 6–8 week touch-up, and healing time after that touch-up.
So if you want to be safe, I recommend planning your brows or lips at least 2 months in advance, and a little more time is even better if possible.
That way you are not rushing the process, healing at the last minute, or feeling stressed going into your event.

A Better Timeline to Follow
Best case scenario:
Book your Permanent Makeup 2–3 months before your trip, wedding, or big event.
Why?
Because that gives you time for:
Your first appointment
Your touch-up 6–8 weeks later
Final healing and softening before your event
If you are cutting it close, sometimes a client may still do the initial session before leaving and then come back for the touch-up afterward. That can work in certain situations because at least you may have your shape there and some healed pigment before your trip.
But most of the time, if someone is leaving very soon, I will usually tell them: just wait until you come home.
Because you are not going on vacation to sit in the shade protecting fresh pigment and worrying about aftercare.
Quick Healing Timeline

Brows
Days 1–3: Brows may look darker, bolder, and more defined than expected.
Days 4–10: Dryness, flaking, peeling, or little scabby areas may happen.
Weeks 2–4: Color can soften and sometimes look lighter before it settles.
Touch-up: Usually scheduled 6–8 weeks later.

Lips
Days 1–2: Lips may feel tender, look brighter, and have some dryness or mild swelling.
Days 3–7: Peeling and dryness are common while the lips heal.
Weeks 2–4: Color begins to soften and settle into a more healed result.
Touch-up: Usually scheduled 6–8 weeks later.
What About Scar Camouflage or Other Tattoo Services?
The same general rule applies.
Any service that places pigment into the skin, whether that is brows, lips, scar camouflage, or even a regular tattoo, comes with a healing process.
And healing plus sun, water, heat, sweat, and travel usually do not make the best combination.
So if you are thinking about any type of Permanent Makeup before a trip, event, or vacation, timing really matters.
The Bottom Line
If you have been filling in your brows every day, using lip liner, or relying on makeup this long... you can absolutely keep doing it just a little longer until the timing is right.
It is better to wait than to rush.
You do not want to risk:
Poor healing
Premature fading
Irritation
Infection
Stress during your vacation or event
Not looking your best in photos
Permanent Makeup is amazing for vacations, weddings, busy lifestyles, and low-maintenance beauty... but only when you plan ahead.
So if you want beautiful brows or lips that you do not have to worry about smudging, sweating off, or reapplying while you are enjoying life, the best thing you can do is book early.
Your future vacation self will thank you.
